Housing Cancellation Fees

 

Students cancelling their housing for any reason will be subject to the following financial obligations. The dates below refer to the date by which a student submits a housing cancellation form through the Residential Portal.

Because of student feedback that cancellation fee deadlines were confusing and did not align with other deadlines, we have adjusted our fee schedule starting with the Fall 2018 term. We are unable to eliminate these fees completely as knowing who will be returning to campus the following term well in advance is critical to the rising sophomore housing assignments, interhouse transfer application review, and other College processes. In the interest of being more flexible to students' needs, we are piloting the following schedule for Fall '18:

(The per diem charge is calculated based on the number of days from the first day of classes until the day you move out and return your key). 

Please note: we are unable to waive cancellation fees except in the most extraordinary circumstances. Per the Harvard College Handbook for Students: "Fees for late housing cancellation, late check-in, late course registration, and change-of-course petitions are waived only when the University is responsible for the difficulty or when the situation involves a serious illness of the student (usually including hospitalization) or a death in the student’s immediate family" (https://handbook.fas.harvard.edu/book/late-fees).

Students who plan to study abroad and will not hear back from their program until after the deadlines above are encouraged to cancel their housing and notify their house administrator that they are planning to study abroad but have not confirmed enrollment in their program. If their abroad plans fall through, they can submit a returning student application and be placed on the space available wait list. Please note: students on the space available wait list may not receive the room they originally chose in the house lottery and we cannot guarantee space will become available for housing prior to move-in day. If students wish to delay a final decision about housing and/or study abroad and cancel after the deadline, they must pay the cancellation fee. 

Students are encouraged to cancel their housing as soon as possible so that students can be taken off the wait list and so that houses can plan lottery and room assignments accordingly.
