I write today to share with you that after nearly 11 years of remarkable service to Harvard College and its students, Associate Dean of Students David Friedrich is stepping down to assume an exciting new role at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).David has been a valued partner and leader in the Office of Student Life (OSL). In his current role, David has been responsible for housing operations and residential programs, student involvement, campus-wide events and traditions, parent programs, and Wintersession. He has also served as an advisor for the planning for the renewal of the Harvard House system. In his capacity as Associate Dean, David also chaired the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Safety Committee and the Harvard College Committee on Student Life. David holds a degree in music (classical guitar) and graduated from the Harvard Divinity School with a Masters in theological studies.
David previously held the position of Assistant Dean of Student Life at Harvard College, from 2009 through 2013. At MIT, David will serve as Sr. Director of Housing Operation and Renewal Planning. In this role he will be responsible for their residential system and the project they are beginning to renovate and renew it.
In addition to being an outstanding professional, David is an exceptional person. He brings integrity, fairness, and kindness to his work, and all of us who work with him have benefitted from his calm and wise approach to work and life. He has dedicated himself to improving the Harvard student experience for over a decade. His presence here in University Hall, and his thoughtful stewardship of the College’s residential life program and work with student organizations will be greatly missed.
In the interim, I will be working directly with OSL leadership to ensure a smooth transition for the office. We will announce plans for the search for David’s replacement in the near future.
Please join me in wishing David all the best in his new role, just down the River.
