Katie Steele is Senior Director of Student Engagement and Leadership in the Dean of Students Office (DSO). She leads the Student Engagement & Leadership team which has responsibility for Pre-Orientation Programs, Opening Days, parent programs (including First-Year Family Weekend and Junior Family Weekend), Wintersession, the Experiential Learning Center and class-based & college-wide programming such as Harvard-Yale, Housing Day, and YardFest. The Student Engagement & Leadership team includes the Director of the Experiential Learning Center, the Director of College Traditions and Student Programs, the Director of Wintersession and Parent & Family Programs, the Assistant Director of Student Programs, the Fellow for First-Year Programs, and the Directors of five of the Pre-Orientation Programs--FAP, FIP, FOP, FUP, and FYRE.
Katie first came to Harvard in July 2007 and has held a variety of roles over time. She has been working in higher education since 1999, when she graduated from Colgate University with a bachelor's degree in religion. Katie worked in residential life at Middlebury College for two years and was Assistant Dean of Students at Sewanee: The University of the South for nearly four years. In 2002 she earned a master’s degree in education, with a concentration in higher education administration, from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Although Katie is originally from Bethesda, MD, she feels very much at home in New England and the Cambridge area. She likes to travel internationally with her husband, cheer for Harvard and Boston sports teams (go Pats!), arrange flowers, visit with friends, and is always up for ice cream, even in the winter.
